Brendan the Brave
Book 2: Brendan Rides the Roscommon Rainbow
Brendan’s initial marvelous adventure began when he met the great wizard Patrick, who taught him to “float on the wind.” The pair then traveled to Magnifica, the fairy capital, where they met Queen Sharon and the fairy community. Their adventures in Magnifica even included heroically saving twenty fairies from attacking hobgoblins. Brendan and Patrick then returned to his home in Ballybunion. Queen Sharon had pleaded with Brendan to become her “knight errant,” and Brendan eagerly agreed. No sooner had he consented to the queen’s request than she informed him of a dire situation that she believed he could resolve. A community of nature nymphs in the forest of Roscommon County was being terrorized by a “Pooka,” a changeling that had taken the form of a gigantic fire-breathing horse. Brendan accepted the challenge, and the grateful queen instructed him on how to ride the Roscommon Rainbow to the secret nymph village. A frightful and rewarding adventure awaited him with the Pooka and the nymphs.

Brendan the Brave
Book 1: Brendan Meets the Fairy Queen
Brendan is a young leprechaun living in Ireland with his parents. He is bored with his assigned task of guarding a pot of gold and longs for a more exciting life. He is invisible to humans, and his favorite hobbies are playing tricks on the six O'Callaghan children and riding on their giant Irish Wolfhound at night. One evening, Brendan discovers Patrick, a sleeping wizard, and has his father make new shoes for him. In gratitude, Patrick teaches Brendan how to "float like a feather on the wind." On their first trip together, Patrick and Brendan float to visit the fairy queen in the fairy city of Magnifica, which is hidden in the Great Green Forest. The night before they enter the forest, Patrick tells Brendan of the evil Hobgoblins who menace the fairies. The next morning, they enter the forest and go to Magnifica, where they are welcomed by Queen Sharon the Sublime and are treated to lavish feasts and entertainment. But that night holds dramatic events for Brendan and the fairies, with exciting resolution.

The Rarie
For more than a century, generations of the O'Malley family have lived on a farm near the River Suir in Ireland. The current family includes Mr. & Mrs. O'Malley, their two children, Brendan and Bridget, and their two pets—a dog and a cat. One day Bridget discovers a basket on their cottage doorstep. It holds a round ball of fur that appears to be alive, but neither moves nor has any extremities. Attached to the basket is a note that reads, simply, "Please take care of our rarie." The family takes in the basket and cares for the creature. The rarie never moves but gradually and imperceptibly grows. Bowls of milk and food the family places beside it disappear during the night. As it grows larger and larger, the O'Malley parents, friends, and relatives become alarmed, and there are calls to destroy the creature. But the parents are reluctant to act because the children are so attached to their mysterious pet. Finally the rarie becomes so large that the parents resolve to get rid of it. One night, after the children are asleep, they push it out of the house and roll it to the river's edge. What happens next is a delightful surprise ending.
